Going to see it with my gf this weekend. Chris Pratt is the reason I'm going , considering he is the only actor in the movie worth watching anyway lol. the other people, blah.

Do people really go to Marvel movies for the acting?

I'll say this Pratt was the main reason I got interested in the movie as well. My only experience with The Guardians before this was one episode of Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes.

That said the rest of the cast was great too.

I can understand liking a few actors in these movies, but I'm not going to them expecting Oscar winning performances. lol

Its funny you say that because many of the people in these (super hero) movies are actually very accomplished actors. The casts of these movies are just as strong if not stronger then "normal" movies.

You're right.

I'll be honest, I didn't know who any of these actors were except Zoe Saldana. I heard the name Chris Pratt before but that's it. The only reason I watched it was because it started before Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

But I walked out with a new favorite Marvel movie.

Not surprising, given how popular and lucrative these movies are. Obviously, the right role in the right movie can make an actor's career, and right now, comic book movies are hot.

I never thought I'd say that.

So where was the tipping point between when comic movies were niche and when they went mainstream? Blade? Spider Man? Sure, the Superman movies were pretty big, but they didn't lead to anything else. Same for Batman.

The first X-Men movie in 2000 really started this generation of comic book movies and showed it could be done successfully. so in a way you could say it was the tipping point. In reality though it was the first Spider-man in 2002. It was absolutely massive at the box office ($871 million) and won critical praise from pretty much everyone (89% at Rotten Tomatoes).

After that there was like a 3 year span when even minor comic books nobody cared about were given a movie. Hellboy, Daredevil, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinally Shitty Gentelmen etc etc. Remember the Elektra movie? WTF was that?

And its been going on ever since.

I think we just needed to wait for technology to catch up with comics. Back in the day Hollywood just couldn't make the powers look believable.

The Hulk, flying, Spiderman swinging, Groot, and all the X-men powers, were just not possible before, and as soon as they were it was an easy sell.

Good stuff. The writing was better than I expected, the funny bits actually got a laugh out of me.

My kids are on Team Groot.

If I had to gripe, I'd say that Drax and Ronan are smaller than I'd have expected. Always imagined them as being really big dudes...same as Thor; in the comics hes massive but in the movies hes just a normal muscular guy.

I mean...Drax was pretty fucking big for an actual human. I don't know too many actors bigger than Batista, other than that guy from Game of Thrones. I can understand Ronin though. He was just kinda meh as a bad guy.

I'm Kind of excited and pissed about the build up for the Infinity Gauntlet. That's one of my favorite storylines ever in comics, and if they fuck it up I'm gonna nerd rage.

I thought they did a pretty great job with Ronan without wasting half the movie on him.

Absolutely loved it. Saw it twice in IMAX 3D. Wanted to see it a third just couldn't find the time. It's the first Marvel/Disney movie I've actually wanted to buy.
